I have a Bachelors degree in accounting. My course work included engineering math through calculus. I have always enjoyed math and enjoy helping students realize their potential in this subject. I like tutoring math to first through sixth grade students and use the inverse approach to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I believe that it is important that students know how to check their answers to prepare them for Algebra. I use the inverse rule. I am currently tutoring 2 students middle school age in math in a neighboring town.
It is important for the students to understand the material through the methods I involve to teach math to this age group. Each student has his or her own strengths and how they can absorb the material. I adapt my tutoring methods to the individual student. Whatever works for that particular student. I enjoy tutoring, and enjoy helping them especially at this age because the math they learn here is critical in early high school. I also think that my biggest asset is my patience. Part of the process is to involve the parent/guardian i.e. whatever homework is involved, encouraging the student. I also encourage the student through positive reinforcement when they do get something to try reverse approach, and encourage them and be positive that they can do whatever that (math) problem may be. My tutoring technique for math is reading the material to the student, doing sample problems, and then letting them do problems on their own. I offer assistance when needed and give them some homework when needed. This approach seems to work well for me and the students. I try to make them feel comfortable and confident with the process. I am patient and I am there when they need me. |
