Additional Info:	I have a Masters Degree in Education and in the past I have been certified as a Special Needs teacher. I had 10 years experience working with children in a special needs school, who had learning disabilities along with behavioral and emotional difficulties. I was also the head teacher in the diagnostic center where children came for 45-day assessments from their home schools, at the end of which our psychologist, counselor and I would write a Functional Behavioral Assessment for the individual child. The class ranged in age from Kindergarten to age 13. My lesson planning had to be individualized for each child according to his/her grade level and abilities with appropriate accommodations and modifications. I was part of all intakes and team meetings for each child, where I would both outline his/her strengths and weaknesses and advocate for the best continuing services for that child. From teaching at this school, I moved on to do private tutoring, advocacy, and behavioral management, which I have been doing for the past 8 years. I live in Arlington, Massachusetts. I love kids and especially love supporting their learning experiences while respecting their learning styles. My specialty areas are Math and English Language Arts. My reading strategies include comprehension strategies such as activating prior knowledge, answering and generating questions, making and verifying predictions, using mental imagery and visualization, monitoring comprehension, and recognizing story structure. I also use pre-reading for understanding more difficult vocabulary words that will be in the text. I use a phonics-based approach to assist children with decoding and encoding. Many of my students have had a language-based learning disorder. There are many reasons why some students struggle with writing. It demands considerable mental energy and requires a child to focus for long periods. Just getting started can seem overwhelming. Add to that a child’s difficulty with using words and forming sentences correctly and you see this task for the child as being excruciating. My goal is to find a topic that interests the child, find ways to generate ideas, i.e., graphic organizers, free writing, lists, and to make it an enjoyable experience so that s/he will want to do it again. I also incorporate grammar rules within the writing process. For elementary math students, I use a variety of hands-on tools to support his/her learning. I have taught children from kindergarten through grade 6, and occasionally a 7th or 8th grader (which includes Algebra). I make every effort to communicate strategies in a clear, explicit manner while providing practice and review to promote retention.
