To Whom This May Concern:
The following is an overview of my professional background and experience:
My career as both teacher and administrator for the California Department of Corrections spanned 24 years. During that time, I acquired over eight years experience teaching academic basic skills to illiterate adult inmates emphasizing GED/high school completion and employ-ability skills relative to functional reading, math, listening, speaking and higher order thinking skills in everyday adult life and work contexts. Many of these inmates had special academic needs. To address this, I continued my education and training, and acquired a broad range of skills in assessment, motivation, and instructional methodology for students (children/adults) with varying learning styles and disabilities.
I hold a Master of Arts Degree in Education, a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources Management and Development, and a Doctoral Degree in Education from the UC/CSUF Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. Furthermore, I have continued my professional development both academically and through participation in conferences and workshops relative to academic counseling, career planning and placement, distance learning, community college preparation, curriculum development, program evaluation, and cross-cultural teaching in respect to underrepresented student populations in public education.
As a correctional education administrator, I was responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of elementary, secondary and related individualization of instruction, distance learning, and psycho-social development. Working effectively with any professional staff and people of all backgrounds and cultures was one of my most notable qualities. My leadership skills were most demonstrated when I was challenged to make critical decisions under adverse conditions. Most of all, I think my humble beginnings and my unique professional background and experience have made me an effective tutor/teacher, both online and in-person, for any student needing remedial instruction in basic academic/life skills subject matter.
