I am a professional saxophonist, having played for the last 25 years. I have played in orchestras, live bands, made CDs, recorded for TV and radio. I have taught my instrument for the last 20 years, most of them in New Zealand.
My method is a very successful one, a method inherited from my friend and teacher, John O'Neill. John is the author of one of the most successful saxophone methods ever written. I stress the importance of tone, sight-reading and ear training. Most of my students are adults, so we have fun getting back to the basics of learning: it is wonderful to see adults immersing themselves in a completely new venture. It is such a journey! We almost always become friends too!
I have Grade 8 saxophone, and studied in New Zealand, at the Christchurch Polytechnic School of Jazz.
My view is that both of us will know whether or not the sax is 'your thing' in a period of tuition of about 3 months. If you have a) made it a high priority to learn, b) devoted a minimum of 20-30 minutes a day practising, and c) seen me for a lesson 95% of those weeks, then I can almost guarantee you will take off. Yes, the 'X' factor does come into play here, but you can have all the 'X' factor in the world, and not practise, or not turn up to lessons, and it won't count for much. |
