Hello prospective students!
I'm Kerina, a finance and investments graduate with a minor in communication studies. My passion to keep learning and attaining knowledge allowed me to graduate with a 3.74 GPA while serving on the executive board of several national and international honors societies. Since I was a freshman, I was on the Dean's scholar list and became Peter F. Vallone Academic Scholarship Recipient. As a result, I got inducted to Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society as a freshman. Following my induction, I became the secretary on the executive board with the goal to help freshmen to get familiar with college life during bi-weekly on-campus meetings. I assisted freshman with classes advisement, choosing a major and minor that align with their interest, and career advisement. The other honors societies that I was apart of included Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society, Golden Key International Honour Society, and Sigma Alpha Delta Honor Society.
I love to help others, and becoming a tutor is one of the best ways to do so. It allows me to share my knowledge and the methods of how I approach a certain subject with others. I got the opportunity to tutor math to 7th graders at an after school program while I was a high school student. I believe that starting with the basics is essential. Without a good foundation, it will be hard to move forward to solve a harder level math problem (or do well in any subject in general). During my free time, I like to volunteer at programs and associations that utilize my academic and language skills. Recently, I volunteered for Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund to monitor elections for anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. I assisted voters with filling out the Asian American voter survey by interpreting questions, reading questions aloud in Cantonese and Mandarin, and filling out the survey for them. I also participated in the Conversation Partners Program to encourage nonnative students to participate more actively in Baruch College classrooms and succeed academically. So, I met independently on a weekly basis to help nonnative students to improve English proficiency and navigate local culture. Lastly, I worked with the team at United Chinese Language Association to integrate conversational Mandarin sessions into activities that explored Chinese culture and proverbs. |
