I am a fully certified English As A Second Language Teacher, certified through Okanagan College. Currently I am employed as a "teacher on call/substitute teacher" at International Gateway Kelowna, which is an international school specializing in teaching English as a second or other language, & has schools in multiple countries (Canada & Vietnam for example). I also have over two years of private volunteer tutoring experience at the Vernon & District Immigrant Services Society. I am in the process of acquiring a degree in linguistics. I love languages & can speak, read, & write conversational level Italian, intermediate level Russian, low intermediate level German, intermediate level French, beginner-intermediate level Spanish, and there are about four or five other languages that I would like to learn (Arabic, Chinese, Polish, Japanese, & Greek) but I currently only know a few words in those languages. I have experience teaching classes of more than thirty students, & they all spoke the same non-English Language (Japanese in this case), as well as similar sized classes in which no more than any five students spoke the same non-English language. As an example, from a class of thirty-one students, four spoke German, five spoke Arabic, two spoke Russian, five spoke Spanish, one spoke Ukranian, three spoke Urdu, five spoke Korean, two spoke Hebrew, two spoke Chinese (Mandarin), one spoke Portugese, and one spoke Turkish. The vast majority of my teaching and tutoring experience has been on a one to one basis. I believe that there are many benefits to students learning or being tutored on a one to one basis, with the obvious advantage being that 100% of the teacher/tutors time & efforts are aimed at & for the benefit of their sole pupil. I also believe that having learned (to varying degrees) multiple languages, that I posess a unique understanding & perspective on what learning a new language is like. This fact enables me to be a more effective teacher than one who hasn't experienced what their student is facing. I am very flexible regarding lesson times. I will do my utmost to work around your schedule should you choose to employ my services. My hourly rate for private (one on one) lessons or tutoring is $15.
I also sing, play guitar, write songs, & give lessons on these musical skills. As mentioned above I am not fluent in the five languages I know to varying degrees, but I am capable of tutoring anyone wishing to learn any of them. If you desire proof of my ability in any of the languages listed, just ask for something specific & I will accomodate any reasonable request. |
