Over the last four years I have been tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects ranging from chemistry, biology, elementary and intermediate mathematics, history, government, elementary Greek, voice, piano and many other subject areas as well. The teaching style that I have always used in all of my tutoring sessions follows standardized teaching practices which I have read about and learned from trained professionals over the last several years. While following a rough guideline that has been shown to be highly effective in better assisting students with academic difficulties, I also try to get to know the student, ask them to identify what they think are areas that they could improve upon in a particular subject area. Finally I compile a series of appropriate questions and methods for the student to run through in order for me to identify if they can correctly identify what areas they are struggling with. This allows me to gain a greater understanding about the areas in which i should focus particularly on.
I am very much a firm believer in going at the students pace and working through each principle, example or problem until the student understands how it was solved or how we arrived at that conclusion. In addition, I try to relate to the students by using metaphors or analogies because i find that it engages them more with the topic and allows them to understand difficult concepts on a more basic level making it easier to remember and understand. From 2007-2009 I tutored students individually meeting with them at my university library, at their homes or other areas in which they felt comfortable studying and learning. I mostly assisted high school students in the neighboring Binghamton area who did not have access to expensive tutors or adequate after school learning centers. This experience really helped me appreciate the value of tutoring and I discovered how much I truly enjoy working with students in all subject areas especially when they showed significant signs of improvement over time. From 2009-2011 I joined the Johnson City Mentor Program and tutored children ages 8-15 at Johnson City Middle School in Vestal, NY. It was an incredible experience working at this facility. Despite the fact that many of the students faced economic and familial challenges, they showed a level of dedication and appreciation for education and learning that I have never come across before in all of my years of tutoring. One student that I worked with in particular told me that he loved coming to school every day, seeing his friends and going through different math problems with me.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching and tutoring students of all ages and I always make it my top priority to address the students concerns at all times. I allow students to contact me via email with questions, comments or concerns and I am careful to always response promptly. In addition I am always open to suggestions from both parents and students.
